The
Costa del Sol is one of the main international tourist
destinations and has a wide range of hotels, covering all
different categories. You will have no problem in finding the right kind
of hotel to suit your holiday and budget; ranging from luxury five star
hotels to guest houses and cheap hostels. However, in some of the places
that have experienced the biggest tourist development there are not many
hotels under three stars.
The
Costa del Sol is supposed to be accessible to everyone,
but there are a number of hotels that are affiliated to prestigious golf
clubs or additional private facilities such as sports centres or
language schools. Sports facilities can range from swimming pools
to tennis or pádel courts. Most of these hotels often have some kind of
exclusive health and beauty centre or spa and usually offer,
either directly or indirectly, a comprehensive leisure or well being
programme.
In
the Costa del Sol the emphasis is on quality and the various
categories of accommodation on offer are regulated. The options are:
- Hotels.
They follow the international hotel classification system. There is a
predominance of four star hotels.
- Hostels. These
are places of accommodation which although not classified are usually of
a similar standard to the medium to low category of hotels.
- Pensiones.
(Guest houses) Basic accommodation with modest bedrooms. Very
affordable.
- Apartments.
Although they can vary enormously in size and quality, they are usually
modern, purpose built apartments that are located close to the beach.
- Camping.
There are many campsites all throughout the Costa del Sol which
are rated under the international campsite classification system.
- Countryside
houses. These are normally found in the interior of the province.
There are a huge number of this type of accommodation and in the most
popular areas you will find amazing newly renovated examples with superb
facilities. You will be able to find a wealth of information on this
type of accommodation in most tourist offices.
Please
bear in mind that it is not permitted to camp anywhere in Spain for free
and you must stay in designated camping areas. It is quite possible that
if you try to sleep overnight on the beaches or anywhere else, you will
be asked to move on by the police or even fined. Most types of
accommodation have some kind of air conditioning, because even if the
climate here is milder than in other parts of southern Spain, you will
appreciate it on the hottest days.
It
is worth checking some of the guides that are available when choosing
cheaper accommodation, as optional equipment can make a big difference;
a TV, fridge or safety deposit box could prove to be invaluable.
