Location of the
National Park

Parque Nacional de Monfragüe

Virgin meadows and Mediterranean forests

In the province of Cáceres we find varied ecosystems of great environmental value, like Mediterranean forests, rocky lands and meadows. In addition, rivers and reservoirs irrigate the river side in the Monfragüe National Park.

Type of area: National and Biosphere Reserve

Surface: 17852 Hectares

Information for visits…

Villarreal de San Carlos marks the entrance to the Monfragüe National Park. It is also the place where you will find the park's Visitor Centre, the Nature Centre and the Water Protection Centre. Different exhibitions, video projections and other activities will help the visitor get closer to the park's natural environment. Routes on foot will lead you to the most emblematic spots in this Biosphere Reserve.

Natural assets

The Monfragüe National Park has the biggest colony of Cinereous vultures in the world (more than 200 couples) and the biggest concentration of imperial eagles in the world (more than 10 couples). It is one of the few habitats were Iberian lynxes still survive.

Cultural surroundings

The millenary presence of man in these lands is demonstrated by the rock paintings in the Castillo cave. In addition, the Arab castle of Monfragüe dominates a breathtaking rock that raises above the waters of the Tajo river. It is also worthwhile to visit the medieval bridge called Cardenal, as well as the village of Villarreal de San Carlos. In the vicinity of the reserve we find interesting towns like Plasencia, Trujillo and Cáceres.
