Each
year a large number of professional sportsmen are attracted to the Costa
del Sol because of its wonderful range of sporting facilities and
unusually warm climate.
Visitors
will not be disappointed if they have come to the Costa del Sol hoping
to combine a holiday with their favourite sport. Most of the hotels here
have a superb range of sporting facilities and activities on offer.
Golf:
The Costa del Sol is one of the best
locations in the world in which to play golf. With more than forty clubs
concentrated in the area and usually more than one course per club,
there is a course to suit everyone's taste and level. You can find a
profile detailing the majority of these courses in the section of this
website dedicated to Golf.
Tennis:
The majority of hotel complexes are
equipped with their own tennis courts and some even have their own
exclusive clubs. In Marbella there is a famous tennis club with
appointments from the ATP and in Málaga they have a professional tennis
centre renowned for its excellent facilities.
Padel:
This sport is increasing in popularity and
in most towns and also in some hotels you will be able to find a court.
It's not by coincidence that the best players in the world are Spanish
and Argentinian. Most of them live in Marbella because of the number of
courts available and the good weather that is required to practice it.
Squash:
Although it is not as popular as it used to
be, lots of clubs, sports centres and hotels have courts available to
hire.
Aerobics,
Step Aerobics and Gymjazz:
Available in almost all sports centres and
gyms.
Swimming:
There are hundreds of swimming pools all
over the Costa del Sol. There are also some excellent sports swimming
pools available for public use in the University of Málaga and in the
Real Club Mediterráneo.
Windsurfing:
In most of the ports and on the majority of
tourist beaches you will be able to hire windsurf boards. The beaches in
the south of the Costa del Sol have the best winds due to their
proximity to the Straits of Gibraltar, but in general the winds off the
rest of the coast are mild and the water is usually calm with almost no
waves. However, you can get to Tarifa very easily from the Costa del Sol
and the southern point of this peninsula is considered to be a world
class location for windsurfing with extremely strong winds. There is
already a well established infrastructure dedicated to the sport and a
number of windsurfing champions choose to train here.
Sailing:
There is a large number of sailing schools
and centres in the Costa del Sol. The coast is perfect for relaxed
sailing, however its not difficult to find windier areas if desired.
Horse
riding:
There is a professional horse racing
circuit at La Escuela de Arte Ecuestre Costa del Sol, however there are
also lots of riding schools and equestrian centres located all over the
region for those who would like to practise jumping or would just like
to go horse riding in the countryside for the day.
Athletics:
In Málaga and most of the other larger
towns they have municipal tracks.
Football:
As you would expect, most pitches are
reserved for private use, however some of these may be open to the
public during certain times. The majority of the public football pitches
are artificial but there are plenty of indoor 5-a-side courts available
for hire.
Beach
volleyball:
Beach volleyball has become enormously
popular over the past few years, at least on the beaches close to urban
or tourist areas. Many beaches now have a designated area for beach
volleyball which can be used almost all year round.
Badminton:
Although this sport is not very popular in
Spain there are a few clubs with courts for hire.
Karting:
All along the Costa del Sol there are a
number of Karting circuits where you can race alone or with friends.
Trial
biking and Motocross:
A popular sport in Spain and there are many
clubs where you can hire bikes for use on private circuits.
Bowling:
Although this is not a popular sport in
Spain there are two places where you can play, one in Torremolinos and
the other in Fuengirola.
Judo
and Taekwondo:
Judo and especially Taekwondo are very
popular in Spain and there are plenty of clubs and centres in which you
can take professional courses or classes for beginners.
Outdoor
sports have a large following in Spain and there is a wide network of
clubs, centres and places to hire equipment in the Costa del Sol. There
are also a number of organisations and clubs that specialise in
adventure or extreme sports. These clubs will ask for all the necessary
documentation and carry out a number of checks as they have to adhere
strictly to European rules and regulations and meet the same safety
requirements as the other countries within Europe.
Paragliding:
The valley of Abdalajís is one of the best
locations in Europe for paragliding and has a reputable school in which
to learn.
Trekking
and Mountain biking:
The Costa del Sol has the perfect kind of
landscape and terrain in which to practise these popular sports.
